Interstate 80 in Illinois, Interstate highway in northern Illinois, United States.
Interstate 80 is a highway across northern Illinois that runs for 163 miles (262 kilometers). The road passes through LaSalle, Joliet, and several Chicago suburbs on its way from Iowa to Indiana.
Construction began in 1957 and followed the path of former US Route 6. The road opened in 1968 as part of the nationwide Interstate program after World War II.
The route carries the name of a former Iowa congressman across the Mississippi. The river crossing connects two states still shaped by the waterway today.
The road widens to up to ten lanes in the eastern section, especially between Lansing and the Indiana border. The highest traffic volume appears near Chicago, where over 181,000 vehicles pass daily.
The route crosses four waterways: DuPage River, Rock Run Creek, Des Plaines River, and Hickory Creek. This alignment required numerous bridges that now shape the landscape of northern Illinois.
