The township was established in 1688 as the Constabulary of Wellingborrow and served as one of the nine original administrative divisions of Burlington County. It later underwent extensive development in the 1900s that transformed it into a modern residential community.
The township transformed from farming land into a residential suburb during the 1950s when Levitt & Sons built homes here on a large scale. This rapid change shaped how people view the place today.
