Pound is an administrative division located in Wise County in southeastern Virginia's Appalachian region, covering a small area of mountainous land near the Kentucky border. The community sits at an elevation of 1,745 feet and functions as a local government center for surrounding residents.
The first post office in Wise County opened here in 1848, establishing the settlement as an early administrative center. The community gained incorporation status in 1950 as the county's final municipality to be formally established.
The town faced national attention in 1935 with the Edith Maxwell case, which involved Eleanor Roosevelt's intervention and led to Maxwell's conviction being overturned.
The Municipal Building serves as the main location for administrative services and local government information for the community. Visitors should keep in mind that this is a small rural administrative center, so checking hours in advance is recommended.
The town temporarily lost its incorporation status in 2022 due to financial difficulties but regained it on February 2, 2023 after making improvements. This experience made it the only municipality in Virginia to experience such a suspension and restoration.
