Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park, Victorian mansion museum in Big Stone Gap, United States.
The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park is a Victorian mansion in Big Stone Gap built from local limestone and sandstone. Inside, over 60,000 objects document the history of the region and its people.
The mansion was built in 1895 for Virginia Attorney General Rufus A. Ayers and reflected the region's coal-driven wealth. In 1946, the Slemp Foundation acquired the property and converted it into a state park.
The house shows how wealthy families lived in the late 1800s through its rooms and furnishings. Visitors can see the daily routines and possessions that defined life during that era.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday with guided tours available. The grounds have parking areas and picnic spaces for visitors to spend time outdoors.
The grounds are designated as an Audubon Bird Sanctuary with numerous songbird species. Bird watchers can spot different species throughout the year, especially during migration seasons.
