Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area, Off-road adventure area in Harlan County, Kentucky, US
Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area is a designated recreation area in Harlan County, Kentucky, that allows off-road vehicles on a wide network of marked routes through hilly Appalachian terrain. The routes are designed for different vehicle types, including ATVs and dirt bikes.
The site was opened for public use in the early 2000s by converting older mining and logging paths into recreational routes. This reuse of existing infrastructure allowed a large trail network to be built without clearing new land.
The area sits in the heart of Appalachian coal country, a region long shaped by mining and hard labor, and now offers a different kind of outdoor activity. Riders from across the eastern US come here to travel paths once used by miners and loggers.
The area has two entry points, and vehicle operators must register before entering and follow local rules. Those new to off-road riding should start on the flatter, easier routes before moving into steeper terrain.
Although the area is known for motorized vehicles, the elevation range, which goes from gentle slopes to steep ridges, offers an unexpected overview of Appalachian terrain. Some routes lead to viewpoints where you can look out over large parts of Harlan County.
