Tappahannock, County seat in Essex County, Virginia, United States.
Tappahannock is a small town on the Rappahannock River in Virginia and serves as the administrative center of Essex County. The street pattern follows the old harbor district and several blocks run parallel to the river.
The settlement began in 1682 under the name Hobbs Hole and grew into a port for exporting tobacco. During the War of 1812 a British attack destroyed several buildings along the riverfront.
The name comes from an indigenous language and recalls the earlier inhabitants along the river. Today this connection to the past also shows in the architecture of some houses and public buildings.
The intersection of U.S. Routes 17 and 360 sits centrally and links the center with Fredericksburg and Richmond. Parking is available along the main streets and near public buildings.
An old courthouse from the early 19th century stands in the center and was rebuilt after the British destruction. A cemetery a few blocks away holds graves from colonial times.
