Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve

The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve spans 48,000 acres along the Chilkat River, creating a natural corridor between coastal areas and interior regions.

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources established this preserve in 1982 to protect the critical habitat of bald eagles against logging and mining threats.

The Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in November brings together naturalists, photographers, and visitors to observe thousands of eagles during their peak migration period.

Four main pullouts between Mile 18 and Mile 24 of Haines Highway provide designated viewing spots with informational displays and facilities for eagle observation.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 bald eagles gather at the preserve during winter months to feed on late salmon runs, marking the largest congregation of these birds worldwide.
