Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve

Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is a protected area along the Chilkat River spanning about 48,000 acres that provides critical habitat for bald eagles. The site includes four main viewing areas between mile 18 and mile 24 of Haines Highway, each equipped with information boards and facilities for visitors.

The preserve was established in 1982 to protect bald eagle habitat from logging and mining threats. This decision recognized that the Chilkat River was a vital location for the eagles' survival and feeding patterns.

The area draws photographers and nature watchers, especially during fall and winter months when thousands of eagles concentrate here. Visitors watch the birds from designated viewpoints as they hunt along the river in their natural setting.

Bring warm clothing as the best viewing happens during the cooler months from October through February. The marked viewpoints are easy to reach from Haines Highway and offer shelter and information for comfortable observation.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 bald eagles gather here during winter months to feed on late salmon runs, representing the largest concentration of these birds worldwide. This seasonal gathering is a natural phenomenon made possible by the Chilkat River's geography and food supply.
