Resolute desk, Historic desk in the White House
The Resolute Desk is a large, nineteenth-century partners' desk used by several presidents of the United States in the White House Oval Office.
It was made from the timbers of HMS Resolute, an abandoned British ship discovered by an American vessel and returned to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom as a token of friendship and goodwill.
The desk has been featured in numerous cultural references, including films and television series.
A modification was made to the desk in 1945 under President Franklin Roosevelt to install hinged front panels for added privacy.
The Resolute Desk is one of only six desks to have been used by a U.S. president in the Oval Office.
