Hotel Pennsylvania stood at 401 Seventh Avenue with 22 floors and 2200 rooms across from Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden. The limestone and brick building occupied an entire city block in Midtown.
McKim, Mead & White designed the structure, which opened on January 25, 1919 as the largest hotel in the world. The property remained operational until April 2020 before undergoing complete demolition by October 2023.
The establishment became known through its telephone number PEnnsylvania 6-5000, which later turned into a popular musical composition. Guests and locals connected the name with an era when big bands performed in the ballrooms.
The building stood directly across from Pennsylvania Station, which serves multiple subway lines. The location provided quick access to major attractions throughout Manhattan.
The building once housed the largest hotel kitchen in the world, preparing thousands of meals daily. After closure, demolition made way for the development of 15 Penn Plaza.
