The Museum at FIT
The Museum at FIT is an art museum in New York focused on fashion and textiles, housing a collection of over 50,000 garments and accessories spanning from the 1700s to the present day. It features three galleries, including the Fashion and Textile History Gallery, a special exhibitions gallery, and Gallery FIT for student and faculty work.
The museum was founded in 1969 as a place to study design within the Fashion Institute of Technology. The collection evolved into a comprehensive archive documenting fashion innovations across multiple centuries.
The museum displays work by students and established designers, making it a space where you can see creative ideas taking shape. The exhibitions connect traditional craftsmanship with contemporary approaches, showing how fashion bridges different cultures and time periods.
Admission is free and the museum is centrally located on Seventh Avenue and 27th Street, making it easy to reach. It is open Wednesday through Friday from noon to 8 pm and on weekends from 10 am to 5 pm, with most visits lasting about one to two hours.
The museum regularly lends objects from its collection to other museums worldwide, including a Latin American and Latinx fashion exhibition currently on view in Mexico City. This lending practice allows the institution to share its fashion and design knowledge beyond New York and support diverse international exhibitions.
