Spring Grove Cemetery, Historic cemetery and arboretum in Cincinnati, United States.
Spring Grove Cemetery is a historic burial ground and arboretum in Cincinnati, Ohio, spreading across more than 700 acres (283 hectares) with ponds, chapels, and thousands of trees. The site combines graves with winding paths, rolling hills, and water features that contribute to a park-like appearance.
A group of horticulture enthusiasts founded the site in 1844 as one of the first rural cemeteries in the United States, modeled after European examples. Over the decades, the grounds expanded and accepted burials from the Civil War era as well as local figures.
The grounds preserve a tradition of memorial architecture with a Gothic Revival main entrance and many statues representing different religious faiths. Visitors can see burial sites from various waves of immigration, including German, Irish, and Italian families whose names reflect local history.
The grounds are open daily for visitors who can explore on foot or by car along paved roads. Maps at the entrance help with orientation, and some areas are accessible for wheelchairs.
The grounds host several nationally recognized record specimens of rare tree species, including the Kentucky yellowwood and the dawn redwood from China. These trees rank among the largest of their kind in North America and attract botanists from across the country.
