Reading, Colonial town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Located 16 miles north of Boston, Reading spans across 9.9 square miles of residential neighborhoods connected by tree-lined streets and local parks.
The settlement, established in 1639 and incorporated in 1644 as Lynn Village, took its name from Reading, England, under the leadership of Thomas Parker.
The Parker Tavern, dating from 1694, stands as Reading's oldest structure and functions as a museum managed by the Reading Antiquarian Society.
Reading operates under a representative town meeting model with a board of selectmen and town manager overseeing municipal operations and services.
The town transformed from an agricultural settlement into a manufacturing center during the 1800s, producing furniture, clocks, shoes, and caskets.
