Shawangunk Ridge, Mountain ridge in Sussex County, United States.

Shawangunk Ridge is a mountain ridge made of white quartz cliffs that stretches across New York, with dense forests and several lakes throughout the landscape. The formation features steep rock faces mixed with expansive woodlands that characterize the entire ridge system.

In the late 1800s, the ridge was shaped by mining and logging operations before transforming into a resort destination with large hotels built above the natural lakes. This shift from resource extraction to tourism marked a major turning point for the area.

The name Shawangunk comes from the Munsee Lenape language and was adopted by Dutch settlers who documented Native terminology for the region. This linguistic connection is visible in how locals and visitors refer to the area today.

The area has more than 90 miles of marked trails open year-round for hiking, accessible through several protected areas and trailheads. Parking and entry points are available at different locations, making access straightforward for most visitors.

The ridge contains rare dwarf pine forests that survive in nutrient-poor soil and depend on natural fires to regenerate and thrive. This specialized forest type found in few locations makes the area particularly valuable for study and conservation.
