Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, Literary house museum in Baltimore, United States.
The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is a narrow three-story brick building in East Baltimore dating from the early 1830s. The rooms are small and simply furnished, with original wood floors and stairs still in place.
Maria Clemm rented the house in 1832 and her nephew Edgar Allan Poe moved in with his grandmother and two cousins. The family left the building in 1835 after Poe accepted an editor position in Richmond.
The small museum house carries the name of the American writer who lived here with his family in his early years. Visitors can see the narrow rooms where Poe spent his daily life before he returned to Richmond.
Visitors must reserve in advance, as the museum opens only Thursday through Sunday between 11 AM and 4 PM. From April to October, Wednesday tours are also available through the narrow rooms of the building.
During renovation work in 1979, workers discovered animal bones beneath the floorboards of the house. This find echoes motifs from the short story The Tell-Tale Heart, which Poe wrote years later.
