H. L. Mencken House, Literary critic residence in Union Square, Baltimore, United States

The three-story brick building with marble steps contains a preserved office on the second floor and traditional Italianate architectural details throughout the house.

Henry Louis Mencken resided at 1524 Hollins Street from 1883 until 1956, writing numerous columns and essays that influenced American journalism and literature.

The residence functioned as a center for theatrical and literary events when it operated as part of the Baltimore City Life Museums until 1997.

Visitors can schedule guided tours of the property through the Baltimore National Heritage Area to explore the restored rooms and original furnishings.

The second-floor study maintains the original typewriter and desk where Mencken wrote his nationally syndicated columns for the Baltimore Sun newspaper.
