National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation, Railroad museum in Baltimore, US

The B&O Railroad Museum is a railroad museum in Baltimore that displays over 250 pieces of equipment and vehicles across a large complex, including the historic Mount Clare station with its original workshops. The site also features indoor spaces with detailed model railways that visitors can explore year-round.

The museum sits at the birthplace of American railroads, where passenger service began in 1830 using horse-drawn trains to Ellicott Mills. These early innovations made Baltimore a center of railroad technology and transportation in the nation.

The museum shows how railroads shaped American society and the many communities involved in that history. Visitors encounter archives with stories from African American railroad workers and learn about their role in building the nation.

Visitors can take train rides on the historic track from April to December and allow time to explore the various vehicles and exhibits throughout the grounds. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the property is large and involves considerable walking.

The museum holds the first telegraph station from which the initial message was sent on May 24, 1844, from Washington DC, a breakthrough moment in communication history. This connection shows how transportation and communication advanced together during that era.
