David Stewart, a prominent Baltimore attorney and politician, built this residence around 1838 as his personal country estate. The house reflects the period when wealthy citizens established country properties near the expanding city.

The house moved from being a private residence to serving as a school for children with special needs in Baltimore. This shift shows how historic properties adapt to serve the community over time.

The building will become the headquarters of Afro Newspaper, an African American-owned publication that has operated in Baltimore since 1892. This new purpose connects the historic structure with a vital institution of the Black community.
