New Youth Detention Facility

The New Youth Detention Facility on East Monument Street is a correctional center with six housing units, classrooms, and counseling rooms designed to hold around 180 young people. The building accommodates those awaiting trial or sentencing in separate, dedicated spaces.

Planning for the facility started in 2007 after federal reports documented poor conditions in existing detention centers. The project was created to provide separate housing specifically for young people instead of mixing them with adults.

The facility represents Maryland's shift toward separate youth detention spaces, moving away from housing juveniles with adult inmates.

The original construction plans went through major revisions when experts recommended reducing the intended capacity from 180 to around 120 beds. This change reflected new thinking about how to better design spaces for detained youth.
