Mayfair Theatre, Historic movie theater in Baltimore, United States.
Mayfair Theatre on North Howard Street is a movie theater built in 1904 with a white stone facade and large marquee sign. Today the structure preserves only its exterior and front lobby as a designated Baltimore landmark.
The building started in 1870 as a Natatorium, transformed into Howard Auditorium in 1891, and became Mayfair Theatre in 1941. These transformations reflect how entertainment venues evolved across different eras in Baltimore.
The name reflects the theater's role as an entertainment venue for the general public during its film-screening years. The ornate lobby and grand entrance still suggest the social gathering place it once was for neighborhood audiences.
The theater is accessible only from the outside today since only the facade and lobby remain intact. It makes a good stop when walking through the historic buildings along North Howard Street.
The building featured a rooftop garden with palm trees where a Hungarian orchestra played during intermissions. Female patrons were served ice water during showings, adding a special touch to their visit.
