Jefferson Barracks Military Post, Historic military district in Lemay, United States
Jefferson Barracks Military Post is a military district along the Mississippi River in Lemay that spans 135 acres. The site contains several 19th-century brick buildings, open green spaces, and paths along the riverbank.
The site opened in 1826 as the first infantry training school of the US Army and was named after President Thomas Jefferson. Throughout the 19th century, it served as a training base for officers who later fought in the Civil War.
The old military post now houses a museum with Civil War artifacts. Visitors can see uniforms, weapons, and documents from that period.
The grounds are open daily and offer free parking near the museum buildings. The paths are mostly flat and suitable for walking along the river.
More than 220 Civil War generals served here early in their military careers. The grounds today sit next to a large military cemetery with graves from several wars.
