Portsmouth Abbey School, Catholic boarding school in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
Portsmouth Abbey School is a boarding and day institution for grades 9 through 12 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, spanning several hundred acres along the coast. The campus includes classroom buildings, student residences, athletic facilities and a chapel with modern artworks.
The institution was founded in 1926 by John Hugh Diman on land that had witnessed a battle during the American War of Independence in 1778. Throughout the 20th century the campus grew steadily with new buildings and facilities added over time.
The school follows Benedictine tradition and welcomes students of different faiths, while community life is shaped by daily chapel services and shared meals. Many graduates stay connected to this place for decades and return regularly.
Access to the grounds is generally limited to students, staff and registered visitors, though occasional public events take place. Those interested in the church should check in advance for visiting opportunities.
A large wind turbine from 2006 rises over the campus and supplies part of the site with power. Inside the church hangs a wire sculpture from 1960 depicting the Trinity, whose simple form draws the eye.
