Originally named the Esso Building upon completion in 1947, it became the tallest fully air-conditioned structure in New York City at that time.

The building underwent a $250 million renovation in 2014, receiving updates to its lobby, elevator systems, and exterior facade restoration.
The original ground floor contained Schrafft's Restaurant, which held the title of largest restaurant worldwide with 1,283 seats.
