Bear Mountain is a peak in the Hudson Highlands that rises 1,283 feet (391 meters) above sea level along the Hudson River. The formation extends across the landscape as part of a larger mountain chain running through the valley.
The site became a state park in 1913 after Mary Averell Harriman donated land and funds to block a prison construction project. This action protected the area for public use.
