Big Stone Lake State Park, State park on Big Stone Lake, Minnesota.
Big Stone Lake State Park is a recreation area in Minnesota spread across several hundred acres, divided into two sections that border a large glacial lake. The park combines shoreline, woodland, and open grassland, with designated swimming beaches, fishing spots for walleye and pike, and places to camp.
The park was established in 1961 as a protected area at the source of the Minnesota River. Creating a state park at this location was meant to preserve the natural landscape where a major river begins its long journey.
Indigenous communities historically settled along these shores, and their presence shaped the landscape for centuries before other settlements arrived. Walking through the park, you can sense how people have long valued this water and the land around it.
Swimming areas, fishing docks, and camping facilities with modern amenities are spread across the two main sections of the park. Good paths connect the different areas, making it easy to move around and enjoy various activities.
The lake itself forms a natural border between Minnesota and South Dakota, and the park sits right on this boundary. Looking across the water, you can see another state park on the opposite shore, and it is possible to visit both sides in a single trip.
