Bradbury Mountain State Park, State park in Pownal, United States.
Bradbury Mountain State Park is a forested state park in Pownal, Maine, with a network of trails that climb through woods to a granite summit. The trails range from easy walks along the base to a short but steeper path that reaches the open top of the mountain.
The park was created in 1939, when the state of Maine took ownership of the land to make it permanently open to the public. It was part of a broader effort in that era to set aside natural areas for public use across the northeastern United States.
The park is used year-round by local families, hikers, and horseback riders, and in winter by snowshoers and cross-country skiers. The open summit draws people especially in autumn, when the surrounding forest turns color and the views reach far across the hills.
The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset, with a parking area at the main entrance off Hallowell Road. Footwear with good grip is recommended because the upper trails become rocky and can be slippery when wet.
Near the summit, the rock face shows veins of pegmatite cutting through the granite, with crystals large enough to see with the naked eye. This makes the short climb to the top double as a geology lesson that requires no special knowledge to enjoy.
