Eartha, Rotating globe at DeLorme headquarters in Yarmouth, Maine
Eartha is a massive rotating globe housed at DeLorme headquarters in Yarmouth, measuring 41 feet (12.5 meters) across. The globe sits within a three-story glass atrium and displays detailed geographic information on its surface made of 792 individual panels.
Completed in 1998, the globe surpassed previous record-holding spheres in Europe and North America in terms of size. Its creation demonstrated new possibilities for constructing and displaying large-scale geographic models.
The globe is named after Gaia, the Earth goddess, and reflects a deep interest in cartography and our planet's geography. Visitors can observe how continents and oceans are rendered in their true form across the spinning surface.
The facility is accessible from multiple levels, allowing views of the globe from different angles and perspectives. Visiting is typically possible during the headquarters' regular hours, though it's wise to check ahead for current availability.
The globe is mounted at a 23.5-degree angle, which mirrors Earth's natural axial tilt. This alignment makes it a functional scientific model rather than simply a decorative display.
