Court Street Bridge, Road bridge between Hackensack and Bogota, New Jersey
Court Street Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the Hackensack River between Hackensack and Bogota, featuring three spans with a movable center section. The center swing span uses a Warren through truss design, while the approach sections have steel deck girders.
The bridge opened in 1908 as a vital crossing point built by F.R. Long and Company under the design of R. Earle. It underwent complete rehabilitation between 2010 and 2012, which involved reconstruction of the foundation and restoration of the original truss elements.
The bridge honors Harold J. Dillard, the first Hackensack resident who lost his life in the Vietnam War, through its official name. This tribute reflects how the community remembers those who served from the area.
The bridge is accessible to vehicles and pedestrians during daylight hours, though the movable center section may close for maintenance work. Expect potential traffic delays during peak commuting times, especially on weekdays.
Federal maritime regulations require this bridge to open within four hours of any request from river traffic, making it a rare operational feature. Interestingly, no actual openings have occurred since 1994, though the mechanism remains technically ready.
