Bergen County Court House
Bergen County Court House, Renaissance courthouse in Hackensack, US.
The Bergen County Court House is a courthouse in Hackensack featuring walls of white Vermont marble, four stained glass skylights, and a central rotunda. The rotunda was designed after the Roman Pantheon and forms the heart of the interior space.
The current building was completed in 1912 by architect James Riely Gordon and represents the sixth courthouse to serve Bergen County since 1715. The design combined early 20th century materials and building methods with classical architectural principles.
Murals from the 1930s showing scenes of American law and local history cover the interior walls. These artworks were created through government work programs and give the building much of its character.
The building sits in downtown Hackensack at 10 Main Street and houses administrative offices and courtrooms where public hearings take place. Visitors can attend public sessions and access legal documents within the courthouse.
The exterior features four carved marble sculptures representing Truth, Justice, Integrity, and Law that are decorated with gold leaf. These allegorical figures stand out as striking elements of the facade and emphasize the values of the judicial system.
