Cowpens National Battlefield, National battlefield site in Cherokee County, United States
Cowpens National Battlefield is an 842-acre site with walking trails through wooded terrain where American and British forces clashed in 1781. The paths cross the ground where soldiers fought and mark the positions held by each army.
On January 17, 1781, General Daniel Morgan led American troops to a decisive victory against British Colonel Banastre Tarleton. This battle helped turn the tide of fighting in the South.
The museum displays uniforms and weapons that show how differently the two armies were equipped during this period. Walking the grounds helps visitors picture the lives of soldiers who fought here.
The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset, with trails of varying lengths to explore at your own pace. The visitor center has a museum where you can learn more about the battle before or after walking the paths.
A preserved log cabin on the grounds shows how people lived and worked in the area after the war. The building offers a rare glimpse of everyday rural life in the early 1800s.
