Lake Bowen, lake in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States
Lake Bowen is a reservoir in Spartanburg County covering approximately 1500 acres with roughly 33 miles of shoreline. The water comes from the South Pacolet River and serves both the community's water supply and recreational purposes.
The lake was created in 1960 to meet the needs of a growing population drawn to the area by new business and Interstate 85. A drought in the early 1950s had highlighted the need for reliable water storage to support community development.
The lake is named after William C. Bowen, a local engineer who helped design and supervise its creation. The area reflects local traditions, with families gathering regularly for fishing, picnicking, and outdoor relaxation along the shoreline.
A nearby park provides access from Highway 9 and features picnic areas, a fishing pier, and boat ramps for various vessel sizes. Visitors should check current boating regulations and permits required before launching, as rules vary by residency status.
The lake was designed by local engineer William C. Bowen, after whom it is named. A boat landing and fishing facilities at the site are also named after him in recognition of his contributions to the project.
