Shiloh Methodist Church, Methodist church in Inman, South Carolina
Shiloh Methodist Church is a rectangular white wooden building with horizontal German siding situated on a three-acre property that includes a cemetery. The graveyard contains markers spanning from 1816 onward, documenting generations of local families.
Built between 1825 and 1830, it stands as the oldest surviving church building in Spartanburg County and among the earliest in upstate South Carolina. The structure emerged during a period when Methodist expansion was reshaping the religious landscape of the region.
The congregation that worships here shaped the growth of Methodism across South Carolina by establishing sister churches throughout the region. Today visitors can see how the space continues to serve as a gathering place for the local community.
The building can be visited from the outside year-round, and an annual homecoming service takes place every third Sunday in May for those who wish to attend. It is helpful to check online or contact local community members to learn about the exact timing and any access conditions.
The building retains its original wall sconces and has never been equipped with electrical lighting, a deliberate choice that preserves its early 19th-century character. This decision has allowed the space to maintain an authentic sense of how worship was experienced in that era.
