Dry Dock Complex

The Dry Dock Complex consists of six connected buildings and a preserved dock structure spread across multiple addresses on Atwater Street in Detroit. The ensemble displays the industrial infrastructure of a former shipbuilding facility.

The facility originated from a shipbuilding firm founded by Captain Stephen R. Kirby in the 1840s and grew into a major manufacturing center through the early 1900s. The operation played a key role in Detroit's industrial development during that era.

Henry Ford worked at the Dry Dock Engine Works as an apprentice machinist between 1880 and 1882, contributing to the production of marine engines.

The site now operates as the Outdoor Adventure Center, offering interactive exhibits and nature-focused programming for visitors. It is easily accessible on foot and can be visited in all seasons.

The construction from the 1890s used innovative steel frameworks from the Berlin Iron Bridge Company to support non-load-bearing brick walls. This building method was remarkably advanced for its time.
