The structure sits on land that connects back to a 1734 farm tract, linking it to Detroit's earliest settlement period. It gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The house is named after Joseph Campau, an early businessman whose property dealings shaped how Detroit grew during the 1800s. His name reflects the era when the city was expanding as a commercial center.
