Eastside Historic Cemetery District is a cemetery complex in Detroit spanning roughly 151 acres and containing three separate burial grounds between Elmwood Avenue and Mount Elliott Avenue. The grounds display Gothic-style chapels, stone gateways, and numerous monuments of varying sizes and designs.
The site was established between 1841 and 1850 and houses three cemeteries: Mount Elliott Cemetery, Elmwood Cemetery, and Lafayette Street Cemetery. Each developed at different times and served separate populations within Detroit.
The grounds hold burial sites of different religious communities that coexisted in Detroit across generations. Visitors can observe how the monuments and inscriptions reflect the distinct traditions and beliefs that shaped the city's spiritual life.
Access is available through several entrances along Elmwood Avenue and Mount Elliott Avenue from which visitors can explore the various sections. The grounds are walkable at a comfortable pace, and it helps to bring appropriate footwear and water.
The grounds preserve Detroit's last remaining unchanged topography, offering a rare connection to the city's original landscape. Several high-ranking figures from Michigan's political history are also buried here, including mayors, governors, and senators.
