The Downtown Norwich Historic District encompasses 115 buildings and structures across 64 acres, bordered by Union Square and Washington Square.
Initially settled by English colonists in the 17th century, Norwich developed rapidly after the construction of its first wharf in 1684.
The district contains multiple architectural styles, including Greek Revival structures and buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Norwich Historic District Commission requires certificates of appropriateness for any modifications to buildings visible from public areas.
The oldest commercial building in the district dates to 1742, while the oldest residential structure was constructed in 1745.
