Gamsfeld, Mountain summit in Salzkammergut region, Austria
Gamsfeld rises to 2,027 meters and stands as the highest peak within the Salzkammergut Mountains in the Northern Limestone Alps. The mountain features steep north-facing walls and open meadow slopes to the south that stretch across the landscape.
During the Salt Trade Era, this mountain pass served as a vital link between the mining regions of Salzkammergut and trade routes to the valleys below. Remnants of these ancient paths remain visible on the landscape today, marking centuries of passage.
The alpine meadows around the peak support traditional mountain farming, where locals manage pastures much as they have for generations. These working landscapes reveal how communities have adapted to life at high altitude.
The climb starts from Rußbach village and follows well-marked trails with around 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) of elevation gain to the summit. The route remains manageable in variable weather, though temperatures drop significantly as altitude increases.
The peak offers views of two distinct Alpine ranges on clear days, as it sits at a vantage point revealing the Dachstein massif and distant mountain chains. This location serves as a valuable observation point for understanding the broader Alpine geography.
