Sparber, Mountain summit in Salzkammergut-Berge, Austria.
Sparber is a mountain summit in the Salzkammergut range located above Strobl, rising to 1502 meters. The climb passes through mixed forest and Alpine meadows, with panoramic views of Lake Wolfgangsee and the surrounding peaks.
The mountain served as a traditional crossing point for herders moving livestock between seasonal pastures. Modern paths still follow some of these historic routes carved by centuries of pastoral use.
Local mountaineering clubs maintain the climbing routes and via ferrata sections of Sparber, preserving access for future generations of climbers.
The hike starts near Strobl and takes about 3.5 hours on a well-marked route. Bring sturdy footwear and water, as the upper sections are steep and include some ladder sections that require careful footing.
Several rock face sections require fixed metal ladders anchored directly into the stone, making the ascent more thrilling than typical mountain paths. These exposed passages offer sudden and dramatic views down to the valley and lake below.
