Burgruine Rauhenstein, Medieval castle ruin in Baden, Austria.
Burgruine Rauhenstein is a medieval castle ruin in Baden that sits on rocky cliffs above the city. The ruins preserve stone walls and a prominent tower standing against the sky, offering broad views across the surrounding landscape from the top.
The castle was built in the 12th century to protect the route through Helenental valley. Over the centuries it was destroyed and rebuilt several times before eventually falling into ruin.
The name comes from the rough, rocky ground on which the castle was built. Local people know this place as an important landmark in Baden's landscape and use it as a hiking destination with views over the valley.
A marked hiking trail leads from the Hotel Sachers parking lot to the ruins and requires about 20 minutes of uphill walking. The path is well-trodden but steep, so sturdy shoes and caution on rocks are needed, especially in wet conditions.
At the base of the castle stood Villa Rauhenstein, which once belonged to Austrian composer Hugo Wiener. Today the building serves as residential apartments but retains its connection to the place's cultural past.
