Burgruine Rauhenstein, Medieval castle ruin in Baden, Austria.
Burgruine Rauhenstein is a medieval castle ruin in Baden, Austria, set on a rocky outcrop above the Helenental valley. Parts of the stone walls and a tall tower are still standing, visible from the valley below.
The castle was built in the 12th century to control the route through the Helenental valley. It changed hands several times over the centuries and gradually fell into ruin without ever being fully restored.
The name Rauhenstein refers to the rough, rocky ground on which the castle was built. People from Baden regularly walk up here on weekends, and the spot is considered a natural part of the town's everyday outdoor life.
A marked trail leads from the Hotel Sachers parking lot to the ruins and takes about 20 minutes of uphill walking. The path gets slippery when wet, so sturdy shoes are strongly advised.
At the foot of the castle stands Villa Rauhenstein, which once belonged to Austrian composer Hugo Wiener. The building has since been converted into residential apartments but still stands directly below the ruins.
