Wiener Pforte, Water gap in Lower Austria, Austria
Wiener Pforte is a natural passage where the Danube River cuts through the landscape between the Vienna Woods and Bisamberg Hills. The water flows through this narrowing between two distinct rock formations that rise steeply on either side.
This passage formed over hundreds of thousands of years as the Danube River eroded through rising rock layers. The continuous flow of water gradually carved this distinctive opening through the landscape.
The water gap region contains numerous hiking paths where visitors learn about local geological processes through educational signs and guided nature walks.
You can view this passage from several viewpoints located on the surrounding hills. Walking trails follow the river area, making it possible to see the formation from different angles throughout your visit.
The formation connects two distinct geological regions, with Leopoldsberg reaching 425 meters on one side and Bisamberg peak at 359 meters on the other.
