Sterngarten, Open-air observatory in Mauer, Austria
Sterngarten is an open-air observatory on Georgenberg hill in Vienna's Mauer district, designed to track celestial movements and seasonal sun patterns using three tall masts. The site spreads across roughly one hectare with multiple stations for exploring astronomical phenomena.
The observatory was built between 1997 and 2000 following astronomer Oswald Thomas's concept of creating a star grove on the Laaerberg. This project resulted in the realization of this unique observation site on Georgenberg.
The Austrian Astronomical Society manages this educational site, offering regular public viewing sessions and special observations during notable astronomical events.
The site provides standing room for about 50 people, while seating areas accommodate roughly 100 additional visitors. Access is via a natural stone path that ensures comfortable arrival.
Six solar pillars mark sunrise and sunset positions across different seasons at this location. A tilted mast serves as a pointer for a walkable sundial that visitors can use directly.
