Maurer Wald, Protected forest in Liesing, Austria

Maurer Wald is a roughly 4 km² forested recreation area on Vienna's southwestern edge, mostly in the 23rd district of Liesing. It lies between the Lainzer Tiergarten nature reserve and the Föhrenberge nature park, with elevations from 260 to 371 m. The forest is mainly flysch with limestone outcrops and flint zones, including the Antonshöhe archaeological site.

Early settlement traces near Antonshöhe show the area was inhabited in prehistoric times. A military shooting range operated here from 1834 until 1918 before the land became protected woodland.

The forest restaurant Zur Schießstätte takes its name from a neighbouring civil shooting range that is now in ruins. Anton Oelzelt Ritter von Newin built it in 1865 and handed it to the municipality of Mauer in 1875; after a fire in 1945 it was rebuilt as a plain inn. Hikers on the Stadtwanderweg 6 and 6a still pass it.

Several marked walking routes pass through the forest and connect nearby communities. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as paths vary in condition depending on weather and season.

Since 2024, the City of Vienna forestry office has used draft horses to haul timber out of the Maurer Wald, a method that avoids heavy machinery on the forest floor. The forest also holds the Antonshöhe, a flint site where around 1930 the oldest traces of settlement on Vienna's city territory were found.
