Maurer Wald

Maurer Wald is a protected forest in Vienna that connects two nature reserves and spans across rolling terrain. Its interior contains mixed woodlands with walking paths that guide visitors through different sections of trees and undergrowth.

Early settlement traces near Antonshöhe show the area was inhabited in prehistoric times. A military shooting range operated here from 1834 until 1918 before the land became protected woodland.

The forest includes Restaurant Zur Schießstätte, a gathering place since 1865 where visitors meet while exploring. This establishment has become woven into the social rhythm of people who spend time in these woods.

Several marked walking routes pass through the forest and connect nearby communities. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as paths vary in condition depending on weather and season.

Three horses work in the forest hauling logs while protecting the soil and young trees from damage. This traditional method helps maintain the forest's ecological balance without harming the woodland floor.
