Gleirscher Fernerkogel, Alpine summit in Stubai Alps, Austria
Gleirscher Fernerkogel is a summit reaching 3189 meters in the Stubai Alps and features steep rock faces along with glacier-covered slopes throughout its terrain. The Southern Sellrain Mountains define the surrounding landscape with their distinctive alpine geology.
The first documented ascent took place on September 1, 1883, when Ludwig Purtscheller and Hans Schöller reached the summit under its former name Roßkarspitze. This early climbing success marked the opening of one of the Stubai peaks to organized mountaineering.
Mountaineers from surrounding areas use Pforzheimer Hütte as a gathering point before attempting ascents via different established routes. The regular expeditions reflect a long tradition of alpine climbing in this remote mountain region.
Climbing this summit requires proper alpine equipment including ropes, crampons, and ice axes alongside good fitness and experience on steep terrain. Access to the mountain starts from St. Sigmund im Sellrain where parking is available.
Two different glaciers border the mountain, with Gleirschferner on the north side and Weißkogelferner on the south, shaping its character. A notable eastern ridge extends roughly 500 meters from the summit and offers different climbing options for mountaineers.
