Waisenhauskaserne, Former military barracks in Landstraße district, Vienna, Austria
Waisenhauskaserne is a former military complex at Rennweg 89-93 featuring multiple buildings constructed in the 1800s. The site includes traditional Austrian military architecture alongside the riding house with its distinctive structural design.
The site started as an orphanage in 1773 and became an artillery barracks in 1785. Later from 1880 it housed an infantry regiment and other military units.
The riding house, built in 1854, shows how horsemanship was central to military training in that era. Its interior still reflects the original stable layout, making this past function visible in the architecture today.
Parts of the former barracks have been converted into residential buildings and public educational facilities that are now accessible. The location along Rennweg in Landstraße is well served by public transport.
The site witnessed two notable prisoner escapes during interrogations in the 1970s and 1980s. These incidents reveal that it served as an interrogation center during its military period.
