Rossauer Barracks, Military barracks in Alsergrund, Austria
The red-brick Rossauer Barracks stretches along Maria-Theresien-Strasse in Vienna's ninth district, featuring multiple courtyards and distinctive architectural towers.
Built after the 1848 Revolution, the barracks originally named Kronprinz-Rudolf-Kaserne provided accommodation for 2,400 soldiers and 400 horses to protect Vienna's inner city.
In January 2020, the military complex received a new name, Bernardis-Schmid-Kaserne, marking its transformation from a crown prince memorial to a modern symbol.
The building currently houses the Austrian Ministry of Defence headquarters, with sections allocated to the Vienna Police and City Council operations.
The barracks' towers contained the original toilets, contradicting a local tale about an architect's fatal oversight in bathroom facility planning.
