Kotor Castle, Medieval fortress in Kotor Varoš, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Kotor Castle is a fortress in Kotor Varoš that rises above the Jakotina River. The ruins reveal stone stairs and foundations spread across the site, showing what was once a multi-level structure with defensive towers.
The fortress was first recorded in 1382 and served as a preferred residence of Duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić. It fell under Ottoman control in 1519, when it was adapted as a military stronghold.
The castle structure represents multiple architectural influences, from medieval Bosnian Kingdom designs through Ottoman military modifications during their occupation.
The path leads upward to the upper levels, with steep sections depending on the season. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the spread-out remains across the hillside.
The site had a permanent military garrison until 1838, with a commander called a Dizdar managing operations. This long history as a guarded post remains mostly invisible in the quiet ruins today.
