Great Beguinage of Leuven

The Grand Beguinage extends across both sides of the Dijle River, featuring cobblestone streets, traditional sandstone buildings, gardens, and three connecting bridges.

Founded in 1234, this residential community housed up to 300 beguines, religious women who took temporary vows while maintaining their independence and personal property.

The complex includes more than 80 houses, multiple communal residences, and the Saint John the Baptist Church, representing traditional Flemish architectural heritage.

The Grand Beguinage remains accessible throughout the day, with guided tours available through KU Leuven university for visitors interested in exploring the grounds.

The Catholic University of Leuven acquired the property in 1962, transforming the medieval religious community into modern housing for students and academic staff.
