Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial, Military cemetery in Waregem, Belgium
This American military cemetery contains 368 white marble headstones arranged symmetrically in four sections around a central memorial chapel. The 6.2-acre site is designed as a unified space for remembrance.
Established after World War I, this cemetery honors soldiers who died in military operations around Ypres and the Scheldt River. It represents America's commemoration of its fallen from the Great War in this region.
The central chapel features a black and white marble altar and a mosaic ceiling with an oil lamp set against stars. Panels inside list the names of 43 missing soldiers.
The site is open to visitors during daytime hours and is easily accessible. The pathways between the headstones are well-maintained and straightforward to navigate.
This is the only World War I cemetery of the American Battle Monuments Commission in Belgium. Among those buried here are eight Jewish soldiers.
