Herlegem Castle

Herlegem Castle, 17th-century château in Kruishoutem, Belgium.

Herlegem Castle is a 17th-century château that sits above the Zaubeek River with surrounding moats and an access bridge leading to its southern façade. The structure displays rectangular proportions with an attached kitchen garden and orchard areas enclosed by the water-filled ditches.

The site may have roots in Frankish settlement from the 5th century, but took its current form during the 17th century. The Van Pottelsberghe de la Potterie family acquired the property in 1680 and has shaped its story since then.

The interior features Ionic columns with decorative moldings, while door panels showcase stucco work attributed to Joseph Moretti. These crafted details shape the refined character of the rooms inside.

Access is via the bridge at the southern side that crosses the water to reach the main entrance. The grounds are surrounded by water, so wear sturdy shoes and exercise caution during wet conditions.

The building received official recognition as architectural heritage in 2023 and represents Louis XVI style with characteristic features from that period. This designation underscores the château's importance as an example of French architecture in the region.
