Thurn and Taxis, Former industrial complex in northern Brussels, Belgium
Thurn und Taxis is a former industrial complex in northern Brussels with warehouses and commercial buildings surrounding a maritime station on the Brussels Canal. The site includes the Brussels Environment building, Belgium's largest passive office structure, along with the Royal Depot housing various cultural facilities.
The German noble family Thurn und Taxis established their postal service headquarters here in the early 1500s. The site later became a major industrial area before transforming into a cultural and residential space in recent decades.
The Royal Depot hosts exhibitions, markets, and restaurants that preserve industrial architecture while welcoming contemporary events. Local artists and community groups use these spaces for performances and gatherings throughout the year.
The site is easily accessible next to the Brussels Canal with good public transport connections. Visitors can walk through the different areas and find restaurants, markets, and exhibition spaces throughout the complex.
A nine-hectare park has replaced the former railway tracks and includes an edible garden managed by local volunteers. The garden serves educational purposes and demonstrates vegetable growing in urban spaces.
