Sint-Janshuismolen, Operational wooden windmill in eastern Brugge, Belgium
Sint-Janshuismolen is a wooden post mill located in eastern Bruges that grinds grain using wind power. The structure has four rotating sails that turn the internal machinery for milling flour.
The mill was built in 1770 on the city fortifications during an era when wind-powered mills were essential to Bruges. Most mills from that period have been lost, but this one remains standing.
The name refers to its historical location near the Church of Saint John. You can watch millers at work grinding grain into flour, continuing a practice that has defined this place for centuries.
The mill is easy to reach on foot near the eastern edge of the old city walls. Plan to visit in the morning when the mill is most likely to be in full operation.
The mill still operates with its original 18th-century grinding machinery largely unchanged from when it was built. This makes it the only fully wind-powered grain mill still working in Bruges today.
